Mahatma Gandhi, said, in a gentle way you can shake the world. That gentle way is knowledge. A knowledgeable person is not only able to solve a complex problem in an ingenious way; but he or she can also lead the masses towards betterment.

Books gives a person an ample amount of knowledge through which he or she can do great for the society. That’s why people say, Knowledge is Power.

Good Vocabulary

While reading a book a person came to know about lot of unknown words which previously they have never heard off.

For example, Take the word, Autodidact. This word means, A self taught person. So, a person will come across so many words like this while reading a book. This will not only enhance his or her vocabulary. But it will also help them while writing.

Take this for example, Leonardo da Vinci is a self taught man. How you can reduce the length of this sentence. If you know the word autodidact then you can, isn’t it? So, we can also say that Leonardo da Vinci was an autodidact.

Positive Mindset

No poison can kill a positive thinker, and no medicine can save a negative thinker. This is what Gautam Buddha said thousands of years ago.

When a person reads about different people, their struggles, sacrifices and the pain which they overcame and did something great for the society and the world.

Then, it gives them a ray of hope and inspiration so that they can also do something good for the society. It develops a positive mindset towards life and people.

For example, Reshma Qureshi, An acid attack survivor, Malala Yousafzai, The youngest Nobel Prize winner, Hyeonseo Lee A North Korean defector and many more like them.

That’s one of the most important benefits of reading books.

Development of Analytical Thinking

Humans are turning into robots and robots are turning into humans, isn’t it. Homo Sapiens that’s what we humans are, Thinking Man or Woman. But, the question arises do we really think, maybe or maybe not.

But, a book pushes a person to think, to question his surroundings. That’s what analytical thinking is all about.

Take this for example, I’m from India. But, why India is known as India. India is known as India because of the river Indus (or Sindhu in Sanskrit). The land east of the river Indus is came to be known as India. That’s how India got its name.

Reading books helps us in developing analytical thinking. When you develop this kind of thinking then you will question about uncountable number of things.

Fearlessness

Reading books will make a person fearless. Some of you might be thinking that how’s that possible. Take this for example, I’ll take the example of India. Indian Constitution gives Six Fundamental Rights to its citizens. If a person knows about its rights then no one can suppress him as long as he will not do something unlawful. A person who knows what he is talking about will always have an edge over those who don’t even know what they are talking. The knowledge which books provides to a reader will give him so much of information that he can easily debate.

For example, If a person participates in a debate about the first prime minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru. And that person has already read good amount of books on him unlike his opponents then that person not only win that debate with flying colours but he will also inspire others because of his knowledge. This is the magic of reading.

It will make them think from different point of views. That’s what reading does to a person. Development of a diverse mindset.

A Healthy Mind

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Same we can say, A page of a book a day keep the negative thoughts from our minds far away. When a person reads he or she engrosses themselves in such a way that they don’t think about unnecessary things. It will make them stress free. In this chaotic world of ours a peaceful and a healthy mind is like a blessing. And books helps in that a lot.

A Productive Life

Sitting idle will make a person more stressful and irritable. But, when we read we divert our minds towards something productive. It helps in overcoming lot of unnecessary stress and it will make a person’s life more productive. For example, when a person reads then there are chances that he will discuss about it with his friends and family alike. It will make his life more better because now he has something good to do, isn’t it.

In fact, a person who is suffering from depression and anxiety should try reading. It will not only help them intellectually but it will also heal them mentally.

Although, developing writing skills takes a good amount of time. But, reading books helps a lot in improving writing skills. Because, reading gives you an ample amount of data. The same data or facts which you can use while writing. It will give a depth to your writing skills. Especially, when you are writing an essay. For example, if someone told you to write an article or essay about the history of Islam or about the The First Sikh Guru then how can you write it if you don’t know the facts. But, if you’ve already read about them then you can easily write an article about it, isn’t it. That’s the power of reading.

Yash Sharma

Namaste reader, My name is Yash, and books for me are like a medicine, which removes my ignorance and also helps me in behaving more like a human.Though I live in the world’s largest democracy, India, but when I look around, I realized that this democratic nation of mine has turned into a kind of feudal oligarchy or kleptocracy, where people from a particular community or I would say particular surname has hijacked this democracy, and the political parties in India has turned itself into a kind of family enterprises where the family members are the only shareholders. And I want to change this, and books are a weapon which is helping me, so that I can help others and my nation.Shukriya for reading this Thought of mine.
